We, the initiators of the EUROPE IS WATCHING! campaign, Bettina Böttinger, Carolin Emcke, Thomas Hermanns and Georg Uecker, are four queer public figures who are very concerned about the situation of queer and trans people in Hungary and do not want to accept the ban on the CSD demonstration in Budapest on June 28, 2020. To make it clear: We are appalled and therefore want to point out in the following open letter to both the government in the EU city of Budapest and the EU Commission in Brussels that the right to demonstrate must not be restricted, queer and trans people must not be stopped at a Pride parade and that none of this is compatible with EU values. Here is our exact wording:

European solidarity with queer and trans people in Hungary and presence in Budapest on 28.6.25
The situation for queer and trans people in Hungary has come to a head since the announced ban on CSD/Pride 2025 and the anti-trans constitutional amendment in April – and this in an EU country! The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU guarantees the inviolability of human dignity, it guarantees freedom of assembly and expression and protection against discrimination. We, the undersigned, strongly criticize the criminalization of peaceful demonstrations such as the CSD/Pride. It must not go unchallenged in Europe if the fundamental protection of human rights and democracy is undermined and destroyed. Queer rights are human rights. Europe is cultural, religious, social and sexual diversity. The vibrant LGBTIQ* community in Hungary needs recognition and protection just like all other people in Europe.
If the Hungarian government under Viktor Orbán wants to leave this European consensus, this will not happen quietly and unnoticed! We call on you to show loud solidarity with all queer and trans people in Hungary and to support them in their right to hold their own demonstration in Budapest on 28.6.25! We also call on the EU leadership in Brussels and the German government to do everything possible to support this demonstration and protect its Hungarian and foreign participants. June 28th will be a crucial day in Budapest for the rights and visibility of ALL queer and trans people in the EU.
